When I started Spotlight, I had two theses.

- In a post-commoditized world, attention would become an increasingly valuable asset.
Six years later, it turned out we were right.
We could have never created TikTok, but we became the first American agency for TikTok Shop. Our clients include Neutrogena, Tower28, and others you’d recognize. We chose to be bootstrapped when our competitors chose PE or parent-company backing. We focused on quality when everyone played the quantity game, and quantity when everyone fixated on quality. We built divisions around storytelling and branded content when the rest of the industry was chasing live selling. And the demand for attention is only accelerating (Cluely, Oasis, etc.)
Our current bets
An agency captures 20% of the value chain. To capture the next 80%, you need to create a brand.
Products will be designed to perform on camera first. What matters isn’t how it feels to the user, but how it looks to the viewer. The lessons from consumer products are translational to consumer software.
What’s the upside?
Money. Joint ventures. Network. You wake up excited to actually work.
Our first employee now makes what most software engineers make. SpotlightTCG is a joint venture with a former employee. You meet the founders of T28, Cherriexx, etc.
The most important thing in your 20s is doing something you actually learn from and gaining taste. An LLM can’t do that for you.
